What is the Portugal D7 visa?

Portugal D7 visa, also known as the Passive Income Visa, allows non-EU nationals with a stable income of at least €920 a month to obtain a residence permit in Portugal.

Investors and retirees qualify for this type of visa — any source of stable passive income is appropriate as long as it comes from outside Portugal; for example, pension or rental income.

Portugal D7 visa holders and their families can live, work and study in the country. After 5 years of holding a temporary residence permit, they can apply for permanent residence or citizenship.

Note that India does not recognise dual citizenship. Switching to a Portuguese passport would benefit those Indian nationals who plan to do business in the Schengen area countries and travel a lot.

7 benefits of the Portugal D7 visa for Indian citizens

1. Visa-free travel across the Schengen Area. 29 countries of the Schengen Area are open for Portugal D7 visa holders and their families for up to 90 days every half a year.

2. Access to quality education and medicine. Public healthcare is available to citizens and legal residents of Portugal. Residents can get treatment in local clinics or visit medical facilities in other Schengen countries. Residents can also enrol their children in local schools and universities

3. Right to live, work, and study in Portugal. D7 visa holders can run a business in Portugal, including opening new companies there.

4. Tax optimisation. If Indian citizens with the Portugal D7 visa reside in Portugal for more than 183 days a year, they become tax residents. They get Non-Habitual Resident status and do not pay foreign income tax.

5. No need to invest. Indian citizens and their family members with the Portugal D7 visa are not obliged to look for a job in Portugal or invest in the country’s economy.

6. Family members can be included in the application. The Portugal D7 visa can be acquired by the principal applicant and their family — a spouse, financially dependent children and parents.

7. Prospect of acquiring Portugal citizenship. Legal residents who have resided in Portugal for more than 5 years qualify for permanent residence or citizenship by naturalisation.

Portugal D7 visa requirements for Indian applicants

Indian applicants and their family members must meet certain criteria if they want to obtain the Portugal D7 visa.

Requirements for applicants. The principal applicant for the D7 visa should:

  • be over 18;

  • have a stable passive income of at least €920 a month outside Portugal;
  • buy or rent property in Portugal;
  • be ready to reside in Portugal for 183 days a year.

Requirements for family members. The principal applicant can include the following in the application:

Passive income requirements. An Indian citizen must earn at least €920 a month outside Portugal and be able to prove it. Any remote income will do: rental income, pension, investment, dividends, royalties, social security, etc.

The passive income of a spouse must be 50% of the principal applicant and 30% for a child. So a married couple without children must earn at least €1,380 a month; a married couple with a child under 18 must earn at least €1,656 a month.

Finally, an applicant must open a bank account in Portugal and keep the sum there. It is recommended to have the annual income sum in a bank account to apply for the Portugal D7 visa from India.

Is there any other way to immigrate to Portugal from India?

Yes, there are other paths to obtaining a Portuguese residence permit. Indian nationals can move to Portugal on a job seeker or a student visa. In addition, investors from India can choose Portugal Golden Visa.

Portugal Golden Visa requires an investment of at least €250,000 in Portugal’s real estate, fund shares, business, cultural and scientific projects — or a transfer capital to Portugal.

The key difference between the D7 visa and the Golden Visa is that D7 visa applicants are not required to invest directly in Portugal’s economy, making it a lot cheaper.

Furthermore, D7 visa holders must spend at least 6 consecutive months or 8 months a year in Portugal to retain the status. Golden Visa holders only need to stay in Portugal for 7 days a year.

In short, the Golden Visa is a much more expensive way to get a residence permit in Portugal but one that obliges investors to spend only 7 days a year in the country.

Hello Rajesh,

Thank you for your question.

No, there are no restrictions on the number of extensions for the D7 Passive Income Visa. The initial permit is granted for two years, and subsequent permits are valid for three years. You can extend the permit as long as you continue to meet the passive income requirements and fulfill the residency conditions in Portugal.
